Anche quest’anno Illycaffè celebra e sostiene Barcolana, la storica regata internazionale di Trieste, con una speciale illy Art Collection firmata da Robert Wilson, uno dei più importanti artisti visivi e teatrali a livello mondiale, recentemente scomparso.

L’ultima creazione dell’artista dedicata a Trieste e al mare

Questa edizione assume un valore particolare: rappresenta l’ultima creazione che Wilson ha dedicato a illycaffè e alla città di Trieste, suggellando un legame costruito nel tempo attraverso la sua visione estetica e la capacità di fondere luce, spazio e narrazione.

Per il Manifesto e la tazzina Barcolana 2025, Wilson ha scelto una composizione rigorosa e teatrale, in cui la luce è protagonista. Attraverso l’uso di elementi grafici essenziali, il blu si trasforma in cielo, mare e vele, riportando l’evento alla sua essenza e celebrando l’incontro tra arte e mare. L’ispirazione nasce da una frase di Lady from the Sea, riscritta da Susan Sontag per Wilson: «E così ci sono persone che pensano di appartenere al mare». Un messaggio che riflette lo spirito di Barcolana e il legame tra Trieste e il suo mare.

Il rapporto tra illycaffè e Robert Wilson risale a diversi anni fa. Nel 2014 l’artista aveva già firmato una illy Art Collection con i giovani talenti del Watermill Center e nel 2017 aveva realizzato a Venezia l’installazione The Dish Ran Away with the Spoon per il 25° anniversario delle illy Art Collection. Questa nuova collezione rappresenta la naturale continuità di un dialogo con l’artista statunitense, la cui personalità eclettica ben esprime lo spirito del progetto.

The artist’s final creation dedicated to Trieste and the sea

This year once again Illycaffè celebrates and supports Barcolana, the historic international regatta in Trieste, with a special illy Art Collection designed by Robert Wilson, one of the world’s most renowned visual and theatre artists, who recently passed away.

This collection carries a special meaning as it is Wilson’s final creation dedicated to illycaffè and the city of Trieste, a testament to a long-standing relationship built on his aesthetic vision and his unique ability to combine light, space and narrative.

For the Barcolana 2025 Manifesto and cup, Wilson designed a rigorous and theatrical composition, where light takes center stage. Using primary and powerful graphic elements, blue transforms into sky, sea and sails, returning the event to its essence and celebrating the fusion of art and the sea. The inspiration comes from a line in Lady from the Sea, rewritten by Susan Sontag for Wilson: “And so there are people who think they belong to the sea.” A declaration that resonates with Barcolana’s spirit and the deep connection between Trieste and its sea.

The relationship between illycaffè and Robert Wilson began years ago. In 2014, the artist created an illy Art Collection with young talents from the Watermill Center, and in 2017 he presented the installation The Dish Ran Away with the Spoon in Venice to mark the 25th anniversary of the illy Art Collection. This new collection continues that dialogue with the American artist, whose eclectic personality perfectly reflects the spirit of the project.
