Vegetariani e vegani in crescita

Plant-based products on the rise in Italy: the profile of families choosing vegetarian and vegan options

Italian shopping carts are increasingly green, reflecting the constant growth in the consumption of plant-based products. In 2024, more than 15 million households purchased meat alternatives, reaching an absolute penetration of 59.3%. Data from YouGov Shopper confirms the consolidation of this trend in the country.

Purchase frequency grew by 9.6%, also driving an increase in average household purchases (+1.8%). Conversely, the average spend per act dropped by 7.1%, indicating more frequent but smaller shopping trips.

The profile of plant-based consumers

When focusing on plant-based gastronomy, both fresh and frozen, the data shows that most consumers live in Northern Italy, belong to middle-to-upper socio-economic classes, are over 45 years old, and have no children. More than 60% of plant-based households consist of single-person units or couples without children.

Vegetarians and vegans driving growth

A key factor in the growth of plant-based consumption is the expansion of vegetarian and vegan diets. Nearly 3 million Italians follow these dietary patterns: 2.1 million vegetarians (3.7% of the population) and 855,000 vegans (1.5%).

The main motivations behind these choices are sustainable lifestyle (32%) and personal health (31%). These consumers are mainly women (55%) and residents in the North (52%). Compared to the national average, they are more environmentally conscious (34% vs. 12%), prefer brands and companies committed to social and environmental causes, pay closer attention to food labels (31% vs. 20%), and are more pet-friendly, with 47% owning two or more pets compared to the 30% national average.

The most purchased categories

In 2024, more than one in three Italians bought plant-based drinks (39.3%) or gastronomy products (38%), while nearly one in five (19.8%) chose dairy alternatives. Compared to 2023, all segments recorded growth: plant-based gastronomy (+2.7 percentage points), drinks (+1.9), dairy alternatives (+1.6), and plant-based cold cuts (+1.4).

Among individual products, plant-based burgers (+3.5), finger foods (+2.1), and condiments (+2) recorded the highest growth.

YouGov’s statement

“The pursuit of a healthy and responsible lifestyle is pushing more Italian families to change their eating habits, increasing the consumption of plant-based products. According to our data, this trend is consistently growing and involves in particular Northern residents (47.5% of the total), middle-to-upper classes (51.1%), people over 45 years old (73.9%), and childless households (78.4%). In addition, vegetarians and vegans are significantly contributing to the expansion of plant-based consumption in Italy,” said Paola Corbellini, National Clients Cluster Lead at YouGov.
